Why I Built a Magnetic Performance Fan for the Surface Pro (And Why It Actually Works)
Share
Greetings from the CButters Tech Lab!
If you’ve spent much time pushing your Surface Pro under sustained loads — whether video editing, data analysis, multitasking in demanding apps, or even lighter creative workflows — you’ve likely encountered thermal throttling. Microsoft designs these devices with strict chassis temperature limits for safe handheld use, which means the system reduces CPU clock speeds when the outer case gets too warm. The result is a noticeable drop in real-world performance over time, even on recent models.
I’ve been testing and documenting this behavior on Surface devices since the Pro 3 era. After years of experiments with various cooling approaches, I designed a dedicated solution that addresses the issue effectively without compromising the tablet’s portability or usability. That solution is the CButters Tech Performance Fan.Built specifically for Surface Pro 7 through 11 (with compatibility for earlier models via the USB-A option), this fan focuses on keeping the chassis within a range that prevents aggressive thermal limits. By maintaining lower external temperatures, the system can sustain higher CPU clocks during extended workloads. In my testing, this has delivered substantial gains — in some scenarios, nearly doubling sustained performance compared to stock operation under identical ambient conditions.Key design features include:
Right now through June 15, 2026, we’re running a special “Any Color!” one-week event. For just $27.99 you can get a custom fan in any color you want, complete with a special holographic sheen — normally a $49.99 custom option. It’s a great time to grab one (or pick a standard color if you prefer).
Check out the CButters Tech Performance Fan and current Any Color event here
(Use the dedicated event page for full custom options: Any Color Sale)Be sure to select the right connector version for your setup. If you’re on the fence, many users find the biggest benefit shows up in real sustained workloads where stock thermal management would otherwise step in.
I’d love to hear about your results if you try one. I am proud of the fact that this product has a verified 4.91 / 5 stars rating! Feel free to comment on the latest videos or reach out if you have any suggestions for me. Supporting these small-batch projects also helps fund continued testing, more products and more content on the channel. youtube.com/cbuttersStay productive and keep your Surface running cool!— Cam

- Magnetic USB-C attachment (for Pro 7–11): Snaps securely into position with no cables dangling or ports blocked unnecessarily. It stays put during normal use and removes instantly when not needed.
- Efficient operation: Draws just 1 watt, runs smoothly and quietly, with no exposed blade edges.
- 3D-printed housing: Hand-made in the USA using quality materials for a precise, compact fit that looks intentional rather than makeshift.
- Options for your needs: Choose USB-C for seamless integration or USB-A if you need both USB-C ports free. There’s also a new Stinger Yellow special edition with a 4500 RPM fan for users prioritizing maximum cooling (slightly louder but more performant) and a durable sandstone finish.
